    KOICA Project Introduction

    Project Title

    The title of the project is “The Project for Capacity Development of TVET Leaders and Trainers in Ethiopia”

    Objectives

    The Project shall be implemented for the following objectives;

    • To develop human resources and technical capacity for entering lower-middle level income-generation country and balanced economic development by      2025
    • To support improving Federal Government’s Teacher Training system and strengthening Federal TVET Institute

    Period

    The Project will be implemented for five (5) years (2021-2025)

    Goals and project scope

    Problems, needs and outcomes

        Based on findings and extensive reviews generated by the feasibility studies, major bottlenecks of current TVET sector were identified as below.

    • Weak governance and inefficient management for quality assurance of the TVET system, due to fewer opportunities of capacity building for TVET planners, researchers, and managers.
    • Despite of the critical role that TVET plays in the country, TVET trainers and teachers are not well-qualified and motivated. Some do not meet educational qualification as a TVET trainer (e.g., without higher diploma), and are lack of industrial experiences which are necessary as vocational teachers.
    • Federal TVET Institute (TVTI) was established to provide practical and industrial demand driven trainings to TVET trainers and teachers, by TVTI professors, instructors, and faculty members. Despite of its continuous engagement, the institutional capacity is not enough to be accountable to the country’s technical and vocational education. Challenges include outdated curricula and equipment; weak industry linkage; and lack of appropriately trained TVET instructors (e.g., faculty members in TVTI) in terms of soft skills, problem-based learning and etc.
